The parable of the prodigal son holds up a mirror, and the reflection can be startling. It’s not uncommon to recognize the younger son’s reckless wanderings and think, “That could’ve been me.” But just as often, it’s the older brother’s quiet bitterness that cuts deeper. Many faithful believers—those who show up, serve, pray, and give—have, at some point, looked around and wondered, “Does anyone even notice?”
It’s a common ache: to feel forgotten while doing the right thing. To watch others return after wandering and receive open-armed celebration while you’re still waiting for acknowledgment. The truth is, these moments aren’t rare. They can be deeply human. And yet, this parable dismantles that narrative with one stunning line from the father: “Everything I have is yours.”
God’s love doesn’t just pursue the wayward—it embraces the weary faithful. Both sons needed grace, and both were invited into joy. So wherever the mirror points today, may it also reflect this truth: the Father sees, the Father knows, and the Father loves—more than we can imagine.
