Living the Golden Rule – A Call to Mercy

Jesus’ words in Luke 6:27-38 present a radical challenge: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” These commands go beyond conventional wisdom and call for a life shaped by grace rather than retaliation.

The sermon explored the story of Joseph and his brothers from Genesis, demonstrating how Joseph chose mercy over vengeance. Despite being betrayed, sold into slavery, and left for dead, Joseph later used his power in Egypt not for retribution but for reconciliation. His actions mirrored the very principles Jesus taught: responding to wrongdoing with love rather than hatred.

Jesus calls His followers to a higher standard, one that reflects the mercy of God. Instead of seeking justice by human standards, believers are to embrace a kingdom perspective—one where generosity replaces selfishness, forgiveness overcomes bitterness, and love transforms even the most broken relationships.

The challenge is clear: the way of Jesus is not about reacting in kind but responding in love. This week provides an opportunity to reflect on how these teachings shape daily interactions.
