LSUMC Garden Team is back and has begun a packed season of growing vegetables and providing learning experiences for the community. Over the past 3 weeks we have been preparing garden beds and have planted a couple beds of red onions, and little red spuds. We will continue our planting with leafy greens and tomatoes and will try to get a head start on our summer squash and cukes before it gets too hot.
Have you noticed? Our 3 newly added blueberry bushes are in bloom and looking very healthy. We want to add some muscadines in the near future and look forward to when we can pick a pint or two of berries and add to our veggie donation.
Again, many thanks to Troop 62 who provided the labor for our 3-sectioned compost bin. This bin will be a big help as we rotate our compost for the garden. Thanks Ms. Mae for the fall leaf collection you provided. The leaves will provide our “browns” throughout the summer as we layer and build the compost heaps.
We had our first workshop on March 12th and the 2.5hr session proved to be a big success. In addition to the wealth of seed starting information provided by the presenter Amy Whitney from Cobb County Extension; participants had a lesson in origami as they made their very own seed saver envelopes for the event.
Participants indicated a strong interest in learning about composting, preserving the bounty of veggies, growing herbs; and a few other topics. LSUMC will continue the educational sessions thru to the fall. Here’s a tentative schedule of topics: Composting: Benefit and how tos: (late May) Preserving the bounty (late July); Fall Planting (September) Winterizing our beds (October).

- Canning equipment, jars, etc.
